Week of March 30th
We had a wonderful first week back after Spring Break! It was so nice to see everyone again and hear about students’ holidays. We kicked off the week with a fun pancake breakfast, which was a great way to reconnect as a school and start the week together.
Phonics
Students have been learning new letter sounds and spelling patterns. This week we focused on the , and the -le ending (as in little and table). Over the past two months, students have been learning the letter sounds y /ī/ (as in my), y /ē/ (as in happy). Students practiced reading and spelling words with these patterns through daily phonics routines and word work activities.
Next week, we will begin with a review of all these sounds on Monday to help strengthen confidence and understanding. On Tuesday, we will start learning the /ar/ sound found in words such as car, march, and hard. Continued practice reviewing words at home can help students build strong reading and spelling skills. Please check your child's backpack for the roll and read sheets for extra practice at home.
Literacy
Students have been applying their phonics learning during reading and writing activities. We continue to focus on strengthening reading fluency, decoding strategies, and using letter sound knowledge to help read unfamiliar words and support spelling during writing. We have been writing our phonics sounds into sentences, and we use writing prompts for each month.
Math
Students have been learning strategies for adding and subtracting larger numbers. We practiced breaking apart numbers to make problems easier to solve and worked on adding and subtracting two-digit numbers with regrouping by making a new group of ten.
Students are developing a stronger understanding of how tens and ones work together and are learning to think flexibly about numbers. We will continue practicing these strategies to build accuracy and confidence.
Social Studies
We wrapped up our unit on government systems. Students learned about the different levels of government in Canada and the roles each level plays in supporting communities and citizens.
We had many thoughtful discussions as students explored how local, provincial, and federal governments make decisions and provide services for Canadians.
Art
Students began learning weaving! We explored patterns and practiced weaving materials over and under to create our own designs. Students showed great patience and focus as they learned this new skill, and we are excited to continue developing our weaving projects over the coming weeks.
Here is a tutorial if you're interested in trying it yourself!
Looking Ahead: Science
Next week, we will begin our new Living Systems science unit. We are looking forward to learning about how living things grow, survive, and interact with their environments.
Students will explore important topics such as:
- plant and animal life cycles
- habitat needs
- biodiversity
- environmental stewardship
