Week of April 6
We had a great week in our classroom filled with lots of learning and hands-on activities! Students worked hard across all subject areas and enjoyed some special moments together, including meeting up with our Grade 3 buddies to look for signs of spring. It was wonderful to see their excitement as they explored the outdoors and noticed the changes happening around us.
McKenzie Towne School is excited to present our Spring Concert for the Grade 2 classes on Thursday April 23rd:
There will be 2 performances open to families. The daytime dress rehearsal is open to families to come watch. Please note, there may be pauses during this performance to fine tune some details.
🎹 Dress Rehearsal:
Grade 2: 11:00am -11:30am
🎤 Evening Performance:
Grade 2: 5:00pm - 5:30pm (doors open at 4:30)
Phonics
Students have been learning the /ar/ sound found in words such as car, dark, and farm. Students practiced reading and spelling words with this pattern through daily phonics routines and word work activities.
We will be working on or, ore /or/ sound next week reviewing words such as before, north, for, and morning. Please continue to review Roll and Read sheets at home for extra practice.
Writing
Our class has been working on making our sentences stronger and more descriptive. Students practiced identifying nouns in their sentences and then adding adjectives to give more detail and make their writing more interesting. We also used our five senses to help brainstorm descriptive words by thinking about how something looks, feels, sounds, smells, and acts. Using these ideas, students transformed simple, “boring” sentences into more detailed and engaging ones.
Moving forward, we will begin exploring narrative writing, where students will learn about the important parts of a story, including characters, setting, problems, and solutions. This will help build a strong foundation as we begin creating our own stories in the coming weeks.
Math
Students have been learning how to use the standard algorithm to add and subtract 2-digit numbers. We focused on lining up numbers correctly according to place value and working carefully through each step to solve problems accurately. We continued building our understanding of regrouping using base ten blocks. Students explored how numbers are made up of ones, tens, and hundreds, and learned that no place value can have more than 9. When there are more than 9 ones, tens, or hundreds, we regroup by moving a group of ten.
Students are continuing to strengthen their understanding of place value and are becoming more confident when working with larger numbers. We will keep practicing these strategies to support accuracy and fluency.

Science
We began our Living Systems unit! This week, students learned about the parts of a plant and explored the life cycle of a plant.
Students enjoyed learning how plants grow and change over time, and we will continue building on this understanding as we explore more about living things and their environments.
This week, we also met up with our Grade 3 buddies to go outside and look for signs of spring. Students explored the schoolyard and shared their observations, noticing changes in the weather, plants, and environment.
Art
Students continued working on their weaving projects. They practiced the over-under pattern and showed great focus and perseverance. Some students even finished their weaving, and they turned out beautifully! I am very proud of the effort and creativity students have shown during this activity.
